Pula is about 35 km from Rovinj, and it’s famous for its Roman ruins, especially the amphitheatre, which is one of the best-preserved in the world. You can also see other monuments, such as the Temple of Augustus, the Arch of Sergii, and the Twin Gates. Porec is about 40 km from Rovinj, and it’s known for its UNESCO-listed Euphrasian Basilica, which is a masterpiece of Byzantine art. You can also explore its old town, which has a Roman layout and Venetian architecture.
Motovun and Groznjan
Motovun and Groznjan are two of the most charming hilltop villages in Istria, and they are both about 50 km from Rovinj. Motovun is perched on a hill overlooking the Mirna River valley, and it has a medieval fortification with walls and towers. You can walk along the walls and enjoy the panoramic views of the countryside, or visit some of the local shops and restaurants that offer truffles, wine, and olive oil. Groznjan is situated on another hill surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, and it has a bohemian atmosphere with many art galleries, studios, and workshops. You can admire the works of local artists or listen to some live music at one of its cafes or bars.
